This space is where vibrant mix of words paints pictures, acts as a "picture painted by words," a "feeling expressed through sound," and a "story told in verse."
The Painted Bunting
By:
Hanna Hong
A cool breeze hits the bird’s feathers.
As the wind blows, the feathers reveal a deeply surprising thing that we have yet to notice –
Feathers painted with bright vermillion, deep blue, and neon yellow.
The bird’s plumage blooms how the leaf dies – from green to vibrant hues.
It is a tiny and fragile being smaller than a crumpled leaf on the ground.
This bird is a painted bunting.
It is floating gracefully in the water,
With fallen leaves and murky bitterness.
Even the water has spots that are a dark shade of green,
Looking like shadows of figures lurking around.
The bird looks at its reflections
Thinking, What is this beautiful thing I am looking at?
I wish to be beautiful like that, says the bird.
